In Baiyan Village, Huiwen Town, Wenchang City, Hainan Province, Zou Hongda, a 73-year-old lantern craftsman, has been learning by himself how to make lanterns since the late 1970s and has been making lanterns with traditional techniques for more than 40 years.

Every year around the Spring Festival is the busiest time for Zou Hongda. He has work to do almost every day until late at night. "Sending lanterns" is a traditional cultural activity of the people of Wenchang during the Chinese New Year, especially during the Lantern Festival. Behind the continuation of this important folk activity lies the persistence of lantern craftsmen.

In Zou Hongda's eyes, traditional lanterns focus on the relationship between light and lamp windows. "The charm of the light from the lamp window paper is the real essence of this traditional craft." By making lanterns, in addition to being a way to make a living, Zou Hongda also hopes that the traditional lantern-making craft can be passed on to later generations.
